Three key trends for accounting
Last week I headed down to Xerocon. It’s a bit like Glastonbury for accountants! The place to be for all the must have industry insights, upcoming trends, new technology innovations, legislation changes and much more. It’s also a great place to talk about the future of accounting, how technology is helping us and more importantly, how we can use these to help our clients more.
There were three key trends emerging this year that will impact the industry and help accountants create a better service for our clients. With small business owners in mind, here is what I took away from the event:
AI is so much more than ChatGPT
Like many people, when I think about AI my mind immediately goes to tools like ChatGPT. But one of the biggest things I learned at Xerocon was just how much broader AI really is.
Artificial intelligence is already being built into the software that accountants use every day, helping to automate repetitive tasks, identify trends, flag potential issues and provide better insights from financial data. Rather than replacing accountants, it’s giving us more time to focus on supporting clients, solving problems, providing more strategic guidance and helping businesses grow.
AI isn’t going anywhere and accountants need to keep up with new technology so we can continue offering the best possible service and support our clients in the best way possible.
Good software keeps getting better
At Cooper Accountancy we don’t champion one particular accounting software. There are many great packages on offer and we always encourage our clients to use the one they feel most comfortable with. It’s also important that business owners choose the software that fits in best with their company systems.
Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and all the other software packages on offer just keep getting better with age. The platform has evolved enormously, with new features, greater automation and much more powerful reporting to help business owners get greater visibility over their numbers.
The conference was a good reminder that technology doesn’t stand still. Just because a piece of software wasn’t the right fit for your business a few years ago doesn’t mean it isn’t worth another look today. The best providers are constantly investing, improving their products and listening to what their users actually need to evolve their products which ultimately benefits the businesses using them every day.
Your bookkeeping software can become one of your most valuable business tools
For many small business owners accounting software is simply somewhere to record income and expenses before sending everything to their accountant. This is great, but the technology available now is capable of so much more.
When used properly your bookkeeping software can give you real-time visibility over your cash flow, highlight trends in your business, help you make more informed decisions and even identify opportunities to improve profitability. The quality of the information you put in directly affects the quality of the insights you get back.
Accounting and bookkeeping for businesses go so far beyond tax and compliance requirements. Good accounting isn’t just there to help you submit tax returns. It can become a valuable decision-making tool that helps you run a stronger and more profitable business.
The world of accounting is evolving. While technology continues to change the way we work, one key thing remains the same. That our role is to help business owners understand their finances and make confident decisions. By embracing new technology where it genuinely adds value we can spend less time on admin and more time doing exactly that.
